One is the hysteretic behavior of elements under seismic loading and the other is the elasto-plastic dynamic response of tall steel spatial t~ames subjected to 2 and 3-dimension ground movements due to earthquakes. In the first field the hysteretic models of columns have been studied comprehensively by Tongji University. Based on the experimental research of planar hysteretic behaviors of 7 beams and columns, a sophisticated hysteretic model for planarly loaded beam-columns was established (Li, Shen 1990a), which can take into account the Bauschinger effect, the strain hardening effect and the strength degeneration effect.

16 experiments and 12 experiments were conducted by Tsinghua University and Tongji University, respectively, for study on the behavior of the large embedded plates with stud anchorages in ILC. shear walls (Shi, Ye et al 1990; Pan, Shen et al 1996)and the design formula and construction requirements were suggested. 30 Z-Y. One is the hysteretic behavior of elements under seismic loading and the other is the elasto-plastic dynamic response of tall steel spatial t~ames subjected to 2 and 3-dimension ground movements due to earthquakes.

A lumped plasticity approach coupled with the concept of the yield surface in force space is adopted for modelling material nonlinearity. A formex configuration formulation of the towers is used for automatic generation of data necessary for the analysis. The proposed numerical simulation technique has been used to investigate the ultimate structural behaviour of several latticed and guyed transmission and telecommunication towers under different loading conditions. The technique has now been accepted by many power supply authorities as a tool for replacing the current practice of full-scale tower testing.
